The Civilization of the Fringer Clans

Fringer Concept Art

Location: Chi'Hamak

Belief System: Fringers, having hung on to their tribal structure, continue to rely on the spiritual shamans who bless and guide their clans (and others when so inclined) in matters of the spiritual world. They are in love with nature, and much of their belief system revolves around nature worship, vision quests, and the like.

Architectural: Adapting from the nomadic hunter-gatherer societies, the Fringers have used the scientific advances of themselves and others to create a unique style of architecture that is remeniscent of the quickly assembled and disassembled tents used in the past. High-tech materials now allow for buildings to be suspended between the massive trees of the forests they inhabit, or to anchor them to the ground much like the more primitive tents, yet in much larger scales, allowing for seperate structures on the inside. Many a traveller has remarked with wonder on the strange architecture of the Fringers.

Political Structure: A series of clans with elders meets at what would normally be a "federal level", though their system of governance is much more decentralized than the Charkritians'. Despite this, traditions and laws do not vary widely from clan to clan. Rather, allegiences and feuds do, and travellers would be wise to guard their tongues lest they find themselves run out of town. These anachronistic ways are also widely believed to be one of the reasons for the Fringers' limited success in their campagn to retake former lands from the Shendolin and the Stellar Corporation.

Cultural Personality: Fringers are rugged mountain people, used to fending for themselves or in small groups for survival. The clan structure ensures that almost all Fringers always have a home to return to, if not relatives. That particular anachronism helped them to weather the Pandemic when it brought many civilizations to the brink of collapse. They are fond of drinking, a good tale, a good laugh, and often a good fight. Many do their own hunting, and regard themselves as "one" with nature. Outsiders are usually regarded warily, and trust is not given easily.

Living in a harsher temperate clime than their Charkritian cousins, the Fringers wear heavier garments, usually consisting of a cloak, heavy-duty boots, and warmer clothing which aids them in their hunting pursuits. They are also fond of multifunction tools for their versatility, and commonly sport dual-purpose weapons as well.

Politics Pertaining to Other Factions:

Shendolin/Stellar Corporation: Never get between a Fringer and a Shendolin. While the Fringers are also at war with the Stellar Corporation, they reserve a particularly strong hatred for the Shendolin, who routinely make slave raids into Fringer territory. Fringers are keen to support communities of their brethren "behind the lines" in regions controlled by both the Stellar Corporation and the Shendolin, and have a free-wheeling policy regarding privateering and raiding parties against these factions.

Kandi’Kana: Fringers have no love for the Kandi'Kana- but no real hatred either. Except for travellers who have traversed the Hamak'Del (Great Desert) on the southern continent of the Charkritians, Fringers have no real opinion on these creatures, though many would gladly go off to fight them if implored by their allies.

Charkritians: Cousins! The Fringers heartly regard Charkritians, in general, to be kin- several hundred generations removed. While that does not prevent Charkritian travellers from having to earn their trust or provoking the ire of an offended clan, it does ensure that they do not have to work much harder at those tasks than Fringers of opposing clans.
